Wide parade of Guard of Honour STORYLINE: Jordan's King Abdullah II arrived in Moscow on Sunday for talks on trade and cooperation, and the ongoing violence in the Middle East. Accompanied by his wife Queen Rania, the king was received by Russia's Vice-premier Ilya Klebanov. He is expected to try to persuade Russia to play a bigger role in negotiating an end to the conflict. The visit, King Abdullah's first official trip to Russia, could also include talks on purchasing Russian weapons and other military cooperation. Jordan's 120-thousand-strong army - which has suffered under 12 years of reduced state spending - is partially equipped with Soviet weapons bought by Abdullah's late father, King Hussein, in the early 1980s. Its Russian-supplied arsenal includes air defence systems, tanks, vehicles and machine guns. King Abdullah is due to travel to the weapons-production town of Tula on Monday to visit an elite airborne division and acquaint himself with modern Russian weaponry. Russian reports said he may be interested in high-precision weapons for land forces as well as anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems. But Russia may run into a competition with the U-S, which vowed four years ago to help develop Jordan's defense capabilities as a reward for Amman's 1994 peace treaty with Israel. The U-S has since increased its military aid by 50 percent to 75 million (m) U-S dollars a year and given Jordan the status of a non-NATO ally. King Abdullah is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders in Moscow on Tuesday, and to visit St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest town, on Wednesday. Violence in the Middle East is expected to draw much attention during the visit. Jordanian diplomats in Moscow said prior to the visit that Jordan would like Russia to come up with concrete peace proposals and generally increase its role in Middle East peacemaking. Russia is an official co-sponsor of the Mideast peace process launched in 1991 but has played a far smaller role than the United States. Abdullah, accompanied by Queen Rania, arrived from Bulgaria, where he discussed unrest in the Balkans and the Middle East.
