Topic: End of Life Planning & Care Recording Date: September 27, 2023 Participants: Ottamissiah “Missy” Moore, BSN, RN, WCC, DWC, CHPN; Ayana Woods, MPH; Lillian Mehran, PhD, MPH, CHES Description: Although the end of life is a topic that many feel uncomfortable discussing, it is a part of all of our lives. Unfortunately, there are a great number of misconceptions and a lot of Americans are unaware of their rights and options for end-of-life care. Only approximately 18% of Black Americans (and around 30% of Americans overall) ever share their wishes with loved ones who may one day need to make decisions for them. And sadly, there are significant inequities in healthcare at the end of life, with patients of color more likely to experience insufficient pain management, inadequate communication between healthcare providers and families, and aggressive medical interventions. At the end of life, our care should reflect our values and wishes and honor our lives. Addressing these challenges requires planning, conversation, education, advocacy, and community support. In this webinar recording we explore: Inequities in advance care planning and end-of-life care and how they may be addressed Misconceptions and truths about palliative care and hospice How we can support our communities when planning for, or navigating, end of life care
