The King's School Boarding House Flythrough Mayoh Architects were engaged to develop a Boarding Masterplan for The King’s School, which included planned upgrades to four existing boarding houses on the campus. Part of the brief was to establish a new style of architecture to distinguish the Boarding Precinct from the Academic Precinct, whilst ensuring consistency with the existing architecture of the campus. Each boarding house has its own unique character while at the same time relating to the established architecture at the King’s School. An sense of entry and identity was achieved with the design, while maintaining a unique connection with the natural bushland setting. A variety of common spaces and breakout areas were provided for the boarders, creating opportunities for them to be together in large groups, break away into smaller groups, or be alone. Every common space has expansive views to natural bushland settings and large door openings that lead from common indoor areas to outdoor recreation spaces. Sustainability is an important feature of the Boarding Houses, with each house implementing water harvesting systems, biofiltration tanks, solar panels, use of low maintenance building materials, expansive use of timber and most importantly the adaptive reuse of existing building. In addition, evapotranspiration sensors are installed in garden areas, high performance glazing used on the facades as well as external sun shading devices and naturally ventilated common areas.
