First of all, if you watching this video to listen to a rant about how elitist PhDs are, you are watching the wrong video. In my experience, most PhDs are wonderful people. Most people with PhDs are just wonderful. Why do people feel put off by some actions by people? It’s easy to generalize from some observable trait from the actions of a very few. If you feel put off by the actions of one or two people, know that most people are probably not like those few people. 1. Sometimes people as very tough questions that you can’t answer. Their delivery of the questions can be off. Focus on the content, and not on the delivery. 2. When people are nervous, they deliver in not the best ways. Speaking publicly can make most people nervous. Once you get around that shell, people are truly wonderful. That being said, I think there is a lot of room for pragmatism and humility in academia. My role-models have always shown me that you can solve problems much more quicker if you focus on the problem and not the politics of academia. 1. Try to focus on bringing out the joy of learning for other people. 2. No one has bad ideas. They are just ideas that are not developed. You just need more development. 3. Invite other people to join your journey. You will have so much more fun if you get people to join your journey. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements. https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money. The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
