In case of a major crisis, the DGGN or his Deputy for Operations may assume command; however, GIGN mostly supports the day-to-day operations of local units of the Departmental Gendarmerie. Additionally, GIGN is part of the European ATLAS Network, which is an informal association comprising the specialized police units of the 27 member states of the European Union.
