Watchmen is a 2019 HBO miniseries developed by Damon LIndelof. The series was based upon the 1986 DC comic book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, although the story in the miniseries was new. The miniseries is an alternate history set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2019-- its prequel is a depiction of the Tulsa race massacre of 1921. After World War I, the Greenwood district of Tulsa was a thriving African American community, known nationally as the "Black Wall Street". The silent film at the beginning of this scene is fictional and was created for the series, but the main character in the silent film is based upon a real-life person, Bass Reeves, a runaway slave who became the first black deputy U.S. Marshal.
