What role do standards play in creating accessible and inclusive communities? This short explainer video from the National Disability Research Partnership (NDRP) looks at how accessibility standards help shape the systems that people interact with every day. Standards guide how buildings, transport, digital services, education systems, and health services are designed and delivered. When implemented well, they help ensure accessibility is built into systems from the beginning — rather than added later. The video explores: • What standards are and how they work • Why standards matter for accessibility • Examples of accessibility standards in Australia • How standards influence systems such as transport, education, digital services and health • Why disability leadership is essential in shaping effective standards Accessibility is not just about individual adjustments. It is about systems that are designed to include everyone. Standards play an important role in embedding accessibility across planning, infrastructure, services, and policy. This video is part of the NDRP explainer series supporting the Accessible and Inclusive Communities theme in the NDRP Research Agenda and the 2026 Disability Research Funding round.
