DIY 3D Printer Enclosure and Standing Desk

Space is at a premium in my tiny apartment workshop and I needed another workspace, so I made this cat-proof 3D printer enclosure that doubles as a standing desk! I cut, dyed and finished all the pieces outside, but did the rest of the build on my apartment floor. The frame is assembled with glue and pocket screws. Getting the acrylic cut to size from a plastics supplier was a huge time saver and valuable outsource. Acrylic is really expensive at the big hardware stores, and I'm not really set up to cleanly cut acrylic to size. Dying 2x4s with India ink really takes a cheap material to the next level, and they contrast beautifully with the unstained baltic birch plywood. This enclosure provides a stable printing environment, gives plenty of access to the printer from all sides (especially with the drawer slides), provides tons of storage, keeps my cat away from the printer, has plenty of room for accessories, and looks so awesome when lit up at night! The standing desk has been a gamechanger for my productivity – I find that when I’m recording audio, it’s sometimes a lot easier to talk when I’m standing up. Maybe it brings out that cocktail party mindset? Designing and printing the remote holder and doorknobs was a really rewarding experience. 3D printing provides such a cool opportunity for custom, unexpected accents like these!
