a track I made in early 2020 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/1c9gFT... SoundCloud: / espial _______________________________________________________________________ Context: Espial was the first piece I wrote after graduation, going into the real world. At the time, my father was being treated with chemotherapy for cancer, he would send me the sounds of the machines, from pumps to beeps. One of these chemotherapy alarms inspired me, and I told him I'd put it in my next piece. You can hear it in the background at 2:05, jumping from left to right to left. The wavering pitch of the alarm informed the undulating pitches of each instrument, to create an unusual, unsettling, uncertain feeling. I was deeply concerned for the future of my work, my life, and my father. It's not all bad though, there's definitely hope in there too. 5 years later, I'm doing okay, he's cured and doing excellently! _______________________________________________________________________ Extra details: This piece is in 4/4 for a bit, then just ?/4. I stopped thinking about the time signature after 1:00. It could be validly notated in more ways than are useful to note. The pad at the start is made out of a recording of my old composition professor Bill saying "um", slowed down to the point of unrecognisability. It's from an interview that he hated, the source of several in-jokes with him. I included this both as a private joke and as a gesture of sincere appreciation for his guidance. The subtle vocals in the background are taken from a recording of some friends and I singing.
