In this program, we proudly present our newest commissions from American compositional giants Christian Wolff and Erin Gee. Christian Wolff’s For Charles North’s 15 Poems and Liner Notes 2 pays homage to his legacy as part of the New York School of composition, with quotes and references to his peers such as Morton Feldman and John Cage. Erin Gee’s Mouthpiece 43 builds on the composer’s extensive work into the blending of vocality and instrumentality. Presented alongside these new works are recent commissions from Tomás Gueglio and Mikhail Johnson. Tomás Gueglio’s Murmelnszenen taps into a mumbled and blurry memory of listening to telenovelas and radioplays, with glittering fragments of musical quotes scattered through. Mikhail Johnson draws inspiration from the 1463 frieze Lübecker Totentanz to create a Dance of Death for soprano and double bass where Death calls everyone to her inevitable Dance, with a particular glee for those who have done wrong in their time on earth. - - Departure Duo (Nina Guo, soprano, and Edward Kass, double bass) is committed to performing repertoire written specifically for soprano+double bass to show the incredible variety of styles and sounds possible through this combination. The duo regularly tours and performs recitals in the US and Europe. Recent highlights include Spoleto Festival USA, a Yellow Barn artist residency, KM28 (Berlin), Jordan Hall (Boston), Indexical (Santa Cruz), and Omaha Under the Radar. Departure Duo collaborates with living composers to create new music and, since 2015, has brought over a dozen works to life. Their work has received support and recognition from organizations such as Chamber Music America's Classical Commissioning Grant Program, The Amphion Foundation, The Ditson Fund, and the Copland Fund. As individuals, Nina and Edward have appeared with contemporary music groups including Ensemble Dal Niente, Ensemble Modern, Callithumpian Consort, International Contemporary Ensemble, Wet Ink, and Decoder, and at festivals such as the Tanglewood Music Center, Lucerne Festival, Achtbrücken (Cologne), SICPP (Boston), the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music, and Donaueschingen Musiktage. Heralded as “a veritable playground for the ear” (The Arts Fuse), their debut album, Immensity Of, was released by New Focus Recordings in October 2022.
