CTEPH (chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension) is a life-threatening form of pulmonary hypertension that is caused by blood clots in the lungs following pulmonary embolism. Dr. Paul Forfia and the entire CTEPH Program at Temple are one of the most experienced centers in the country for the treatment of this condition. CTEPH is a condition of high blood pressure in the lungs that relates to a blood clot in the lung after a pulmonary embolism. This ultimately can lead to a condition of right-sided heart failure. If a person is diagnosed with CTEPH, typically the only thing that can be offered is medical therapy, and what we often see in those patients is that they never improved. The most effective and what should be the most commonly applied treatment is surgical. There are very few CTEPH centers in the United States. In terms of PTE, there are less than 10 academic medical centers in the United States that do any of these surgeries at all. At Temple, we are now the second largest PTE program in the United States and certainly the largest PTE program on the East Coast. For many of our patients with CTEPH who undergo PTE surgery, they have complete resolution of their pulmonary hypertension and a complete reversal of their right-sided heart failure.
