Hummer H1 (HMMWV / Humvee) AM General Promotion Hummer H1 (HMMWV / Humvee) Ad spot shows various HMMWVs. The Hummer SUV stands out in a crowd with its unmistakable design — boldly square and impressively broad, these robust vehicles were initially crafted for military purposes, and their rugged roots are evident. For avid Hummer enthusiasts, the tank-like appearance and nature of these colossal rock-crawlers are not flaws but rather selling points. The Hummer's lineage can be traced back to another military icon — the Jeep. Originating from the 1940s design by the Willys-Overland company, the Jeep's popularity led to its acquisition by Henry J. Kaiser in 1953, resulting in the name change to Kaiser-Jeep. In 1970, American Motors took over Kaiser-Jeep, renaming it the Jeep Corp and operating through two divisions: a commercial products division in Toledo, Ohio, and a government products division in South Bend, Indiana. A year later, the government products division emerged as a wholly owned subsidiary, AM General. In the early 1980s, the company designed the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) to compete for a U.S. Army contract. Winning a 1983 production contract marked the start of numerous contracts, requiring the delivery of 55,000 vehicles over five years. AM General's Humvees showcased their prowess during the Persian Gulf War in the early '90s, gaining acclaim beyond military circles. Capitalizing on this success, AM General introduced a civilian version, the Hummer, in 1992. In 1999, General Motors acquired the rights to the Hummer brand, taking charge of development, marketing, and distribution. The Hummer H1 continued the legacy of the AM General Hummer, joined by the more refined H2 and H3, based on other GM SUVs. GM halted the Hummer brand in 2010 due to slowed sales amid the global financial crisis. However, about a decade later, GM announced the revival of the Hummer name. No longer a distinct brand, the new Hummer vehicles are upscale trucks and SUVs equipped with all-electric powertrains, now sold under the GMC brand. While mechanically unrelated to the old models, these new Hummer EVs maintain the brand's distinctive styling and rugged off-road capabilities, featuring modern technology, advanced features, and enhanced comfort.
