This is a driving tour video of Thunder Bay, Ontario. With a population of about 110,000 in the city proper, Thunder Bay is the largest city in Northwestern Ontario and the largest city on the Lake Superior Shore. Thunder Bay incorporated as a city in 1970 with an amalgamation of the two major towns of Port Arthur and Fort William on either end of the Kaministiquia River. As such, Thunder Bay has two distinct downtown areas and a unique pattern of development connected by the newer intercity area. Thunder Bay developed as an important intermodal shipping hub in the early half of the 20th century due to its strategic location on the western half of Lake Superior allowed it become the Canadian start point for ships traveling east along the St.Lawrence Seaway. Rail cars bringing grain and other bulk products from Western Canada were shipped to Thunder Bay to be transferred onto lake freighters exporting goods to eastern North America and Europe. The importance of the St. Lawrence Seaway for shipping diminished in the 2nd half of the 20th century and as a result the importance Thunder Bay's port has diminished as well, however, it still remains a strong part of the local economy.
