(16 Feb 1972) STORY In Britain, the first national coal strike for 46 years threatened to bring the country to a standstill. The miners successfully picketed coal stock yards to prevent the delivery of coal to power stations. The result was massive power cuts throughout the country that hit domestic consumers and industry alike. The Government declared a State of Emergency, and forbade industry to use any electricity on three days of the week. Nearly two million people were thrown out of work, and millions more were put on short-time arrangements. This report examines the underlying causes of the dispute, and assesses coal as a reliable source of power in the future.
