Can the Social Security disability judge deny your #backpain case because you have made the decision not to undergo #spinesurgery? As I discuss in this video, the answer is “no,” Social Security cannot punish you for choosing to forego any type of invasive surgery - whether an operation for a #herniateddisc on your lower back (#lumbarspine), your neck (#cervicalspine) or anywhere else on your back. Every type of significant surgery carries a certain amount of risk of complications, which could include #paralysis or even death. You also may not be an ideal candidate for #surgery - perhaps you live alone without anyone to help you after an operation, or perhaps you are a high risk surgical candidate because of #obesity, #diabetes or even because of emotional instability. Your back pain case will be stronger if your #orthopedicsurgeon or #neurosurgeon has recommended surgery - this shows that your condition is extremely serious. If you choose not to have any surgical procedures, however, you need to be prepared to explain why to the Social Security judge.
