Check out our second ever offering of hand-forged home goods! They will be available at 8pm EST Monday, July 22 at www.harkandheed.com. We made a Leaf Wall Hook and a matching Tri-leaf Trivet. They were inspired by early medieval Gothic era ironwork, specifically the hinges of the Notre Dame Cathedral. The documentary The Devil's Blacksmith inspired and helped refine the process. To create the leaf, individual chasing tools were forged and filled in the shapes of the lobes of the leaves. Then a leaf blank is forged and the lobes are chased into the surface of the steel. The edges of the leaf are then filed to perfect the form. Once the first leaf is created it is pressed into a hot piece of steel to make a mold which can then be used to produce replicas of the original.
