What is compound nevus? Compound naevi are considered to be benign neoplasms of melanocytes if they arise in later life. Compound naevi arise from a flat (junctional) naevus that exists earlier in life and may have a raised central portion of deeper pigmentation with surrounding tan-brown macular pigmentation. Compound nevus is a type of mole made up of pigment cells. Considered normal skin developments, they start as flat discolorations and become raised. They can be irregular in shape and color and are usually not cancerous. Most of the time, the overriding reasons to remove a congenital pigmented nevus are first to reduce melanoma risk and second to improve appearance which can be fundamental to improving a patient's overall psychosocial state.
