2023 May 04, Thurs, 70°F -- A feat of architecture. A modern wonder where faith meets art. Designed by Master Builder Antoni Gaudí. A truly exceptional masterpiece earning Barcelona another honor of UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. Although it's considered a 'minor basilica' as consecrated by Pope Pope Benedict XVI on 7 November 2010, Sagrada Familia is a colossal church that can seat 8000 worshippers. Calling it a minor is an extreme nonsense. A beauty in and out. Every nook and cranny is a piece of art. The entire church is brimming with symbols and references from the liturgy. Gaudi's love for nature and God can be felt and seen in his work. From a distance, the exterior is jaw dropping with a commanding view of 330-foot spires topped with crosses appearing like a forest of Redwood giants. The facades on each street tells some biblical stories. On the west side is the Passion façade on Carrer de Sardenya, dedicated to the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. On the east side is the Nativity façade on Carrer de la Marina explains the birth of Jesus expressing the “joy and hope of life”. The main façade, or the Glory façade, located on Carrer de Mallorca, faces the sea. It is under construction. When completed, it will show the history of humanity from Adam and Eve through the Last Judgement. The highlights of the interior are equally stunning as the exterior. Gaudi's vision is to recreate a rain forest like paradise setting a contemplative mood and spiritual awakening. The use of towering columns, vaults and arches with stained-glass windows captivating light and color create the dramatic/magical moments anytime of the day or season. On the Nativity side, you see more bluer/green tone esp during summer solstice, while on the Passion (west) side, you see more of orange/yellow tone esp before the sunset. If there's any building on earth you'd need to see before you die, it's the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia. Hands-down. Do you agree?? Please let me know what you think. Thank you.
