A local court in northwest China's Gansu Province has sentenced six ethnic Tibetans to prison terms ranging from three to 12 years, for their roles in an October self-immolation case. The Xiahe County People's Court convicted Padma Tamdru and three others of intentional homicide and sentenced them to 12, 11, 8 and 7 years in jail, respectively. Two other defendants, Do Gekyap and Yang Monje were convicted of "picking quarrels and provoking troubles" and sentenced to four and three years in prison, respectively. The court found that a local Tibetan villager set himself on fire near a shopping center in the county around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 23, 2012. When the police officers were trying to rescue the self-immolator, Padma Tamdru, with the help of other five, attacked the officers and hindered their rescue efforts, the court found. De Koraga, deputy town chief of Labrang town of Xiahe county, said, "We should firmly fight against with these criminals who intentionally sabotage our ethnic harmony and social stability." The verdict was made after an open trial Thursday, which was attended by around 70 people including the defendants' family members and relatives. Yang Monje's brother said, "As the brother of the Yang Monje, I feel very sorry. The whole family scolded her afterwards. We hope in the prison she will realize that what she did was wrong." Tibetan translators were provided for the trial. During the court hearing, the six defendants and their attorneys, and the prosecutors, all expressed their opinions. What they have done was a challenge to the Chinese Law and extreme indifference towards other people's lives. It harmed the ethnic harmony and social stability. Though the suspects pleaded guilty and expressed regret, they will be staying in prison from 3 to 12 years. Video and Story from CCTV News.
