Woodworking Joints Series - Haunched Mortise and Tenon Joint In furniture making, we often wish to hide the mechanics of a joint (for example the lapped dovetail hides the end grain of the tails, the tenon and mitre hides the included mortise and tenon). The haunched mortise and tenon provides a joint where the mechanics are hidden from all but one face, whilst also preventing cupping of the tenoned component. It is widely used for connecting table rails to legs, and for door style to rail joints. Watch me as I take you through the process of making one. Note. The title picture shows both the joint as made in the video (where the rail is set back from the style) and a flushed joint. The only difference with the flushed joint, is that the components are first prepared to the same thickness, and the mortise gauge offset is kept the same for marking both style and rail. My 'Accurate Preparation - Rectangular Hexahedron' series of videos give detailed instructions on how to prepare a face side and face edge, essential to making a good joint: Face side - • Accurate Preparation: Rectangular Hexahedr...
