European Union in The Gambia funded Access to Justice - Community Mediators Training

The EU funded project "Access to Justice and Legal Education" took a holistic approach for improving all aspects of the justice delivery system in The Gambia. In addition to activities relating to training of legal personnel that constitute the tripartite legal system, namely judges, magistrates, cadis, and Alkalos, the project also focuses on improving the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) system in The Gambia. The assessment carried out under this project revealed that Community Mediators are in need of capacity development to carry out their tasks. The EU therefore launched the delivery of a training package for Community Mediators. The form of mediation adopted by Community Mediators is more akin to the traditional form of dispute resolution, and community members find it much easier to respect agreements reached through the community mediation system. Community Mediators shall therefore always keep in mind that one of the best ways to persuade others is with the ears—by listening to them. The trainings were rolled out in four Regions, namely Basse Upper River Region (February 20th to 22nd, 2017), Brikama West Coast Region (February 27th to March 1st, 2017), Farafenni North Bank Region (March 13th to 15th, 2017), and Janjanbureh Central River Region from February (April 17th to 19th, 2017). Participants in the trainings were drawn from Community Mediators within the communities and representatives of district Tribunals.
