The revised Hip Fracture Clinical Care Standard was launched by the Australian Commission in Safety and Quality in Health Care on 11 September 2023. The Hip Fracture Clinical Care Standard provides guidance to clinicians on how to improve the assessment and management of people with a hip fracture, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and reducing their risk of another fracture. A hip fracture is a break occurring at the top of the thigh bone (femur), near the pelvis. Individuals with hip fracture are over 3.5 times more likely to die within 12 months compared to non-injured individuals. Key markers of quality of care in hip fracture – such as time to surgery, complication rates, hospital readmission rates and length of stay – are addressed in the revised clinical care standard. The Commission's Chief Medical Officer, Conjoint Associate Professor Carolyn Hullick, outlined changes in the the revised standard at the national Hip Fest conference held by the Australia and New Zealand Hip Fracture Registry (ANZHFR) on the Sunshine Coast.
