(24 Apr 1995) T/I 10:32:22 STORY: IRAN LOCATION: DELHI, INDIA DATE: 18 APRIL 1995 DURATION: 1.17 Indian parliament honours Rafsanjani Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao on Tuesday (18/4) welcomed Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani to New Delhi at the start of a three-day state visit hailed as a landmark event by the two countries. Rao, accompanying Rafsanjani at a rare foreign address to the joint houses of parliament, said both countries must together face "new threats to peace and new hurdles to development" in the world. The US has criticised the visit. Speaking shortly after visiting US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin had conveyed Washington's "extremely strong concern" about Iran to him, Rao told Rafsanjani: "We hope your historic visit will be a landmark in our bilateral relations." Rafsanjani is visiting India to seek closer co-operation in modernising Tehran's economy, which has suffered because of trade restrictions imposed by the United States and a few other Western nations. They accuse Iran of sponsoring international terrorism. India wants Iranian help in making its exports available to the emerging markets of Central Asia.
