READ FIRST: I recorded this as a response to a comment I received regarding the slow starting rate with a 1 motor 2 trailer consist trying to accelerate up the 4.3%-4.5% grade out of Rockridge. After testing this myself, this is my conclusion: "I just ran a test with the 1M 2T consist. It did indeed take a bit to get up to 20-22 mph starting from a standing stop at Rockridge. What I will say is that it's likely due to the fact that I've set starting TE to 11k lbs. Now, I could double that, but effectively what you'd be doing is just getting the train to reach 22 mph faster, since that is the balancing speed for 1 motor (with only 560 hp) hauling 2 trailers up the 4.4% prevailing grade. The issue with doubling starting TE is that then you're looking at some unrealistic starting acceleration on level track. 11k lbs will give you a realistic rate of about 1.3-1.8 mph/s with one motor and one or two trailers. Based on the data I could find from that time period, it would not make sense to get the train to accelerate faster. I would surmise that SN wouldn't really be running 1 motor with 2 trailers up that grade very often if they knew the train had to make a stop at Rockridge going east. For that type of service, you'd probably want at least a 1 to 1 motor trailer ratio or higher. For services not stopping at Rockridge, the 1 motor 2 trailer consist would probably be fine, since you'd have the throttle wrapped up and already be doing about 25 coming east through Rockridge, and based on the power curve, you'd hold about 20-22 mph up the 4.4% grade until you passed through the short tunnel." In short, I could modify the starting TE up to about 16k lbs, but ultimately, that would not really change too much. Let me know what you think!
