I recently decided to purchase a nice clip on mic. I narrowed my search down to 3 models: DPA 4099t (used by Randy Brecker) AMT P800 (used by Cuong Vu & Alex Sipiagin) SD Systems LCM 77 (used by Miles Davis and Chris Botti) Of the 3 models listed above I was most interested in the SD Systems mic specifically because of the fact that it was used by two of the most famous trumpeters (Miles and Botti) who are known for their sounds. The mic that they trust would probably be a mic that I would trust. While doing my research online, I was able to find plenty of information and even youtube videos of the DPA and AMT mics but I couldn't really find anything on the SD Systems mic. So I contacted the great Trent Austin (since he's tried everything under the sun that pertains to the trumpet) and asked his advice. Trent was SUPER helpful and in the end recommended the SD Systems mic. So that is the mic I ended up purchasing. The mic arrived today and I immediately slapped it on the horn and recorded a bit to see how the mic worked. The mic comes with a preamp that clips onto your belt. The preamp has an on/off switch, an EQ knob, and a volume knob (no more having to get the sound guys attention to tell him to turn up the trumpet). The video here is just the raw sound of the mic being recorded into GarageBand. The EQ on the pre amp is set with everything in the middle (not too bright, not too dark) and I am not using any EQ, reverb, or anything else in GarageBand. Overall I am happy with the sound of the mic. It does pick up a bit of valve noise though (which you'll definitely hear in the video) but I don't think it will be noticeable on a gig. This video doesn't contain any fancy playing, please don't critique my playing. I just wanted to post this video so that anyone else in the market for a clip-on mic can have something to reference with the other mics available on the market. I hope this helps.
