Lesson Plan: Sculpting the Torso & Back in ZBrush Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will understand the key anatomical landmarks of the torso and back and apply that knowledge to sculpt realistic structures in ZBrush. Lesson Structure: Student Work Review (15-20 min) Provide feedback on students' previous torso and back sculpts. Identify common mistakes in structure and proportions. Address questions before diving into the lesson. Anatomy Breakdown (30 min) Torso (Front) Key Muscles: Pectoralis major/minor, Serratus anterior, Rectus abdominis, Obliques. Bony Landmarks: Clavicle, Sternum, Ribcage, Iliac crest. Form Considerations: Torso tapers from chest to waist; ribcage dictates upper body shape. Back Key Muscles: Trapezius, Latissimus dorsi, Rhomboids, Erector spinae. Bony Landmarks: Scapulae, Spine (Thoracic, Lumbar), Sacrum. Form Considerations: Overlapping layers of muscle, tension lines, and movement. Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them (15 min) Flat, stiff-looking torsos lacking muscle definition. Over-defining the abs, making them look unnatural. Ignoring ribcage structure, making the torso too cylindrical. Incorrect scapula placement, affecting back muscle flow. ZBrush Demonstration (45-60 min) Blockout Phase: Start with a sphere or base mesh. Use Dynamesh for rough shaping. Primary Forms: Use Move & Clay Buildup to establish volume. Define the ribcage and pelvis first. Secondary Forms: Sculpt major muscle masses (pecs, abs, latissimus). Define muscle separations using Dam Standard. Refining Details: Add skin folds and muscle tension. Use Trim Dynamic for plane changes. Final Adjustments: Ensure symmetry and correct posture. Smooth and polish with appropriate brushes. Q&A / Student Practice (Remaining Time) Address individual sculpting challenges. Provide hands-on feedback.
