(26 Jan 2007) ++ NIGHT SHOTS ++ 1. Tracking shots of empty streets, soldiers patrolling 2. Military vehicles patrolling along street 3. Tracking shot of empty street STORYLINE: The streets of Beirut were empty on Thursday evening after the military declared a curfew for the first time since 1996. AP Television pictures showed the military patrolling the empty streets. Students loyal to Lebanon's government battled Hezbollah opposition supporters armed with homemade clubs and stones around a Beirut university earlier in the day. The melee deepened worries about the country's ability to contain the political and sectarian rivalries threatening to push it towards civil war. At least three people were killed and dozens were injured in the clashes before army troops backed by tanks dispersed most rioters. Leaders on all sides rushed to call for calm. In Paris on Thursday, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora pleaded to his countrymen to "distance themselves from tensions." Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah - who has insisted in recent days he does not want Lebanon to tumble into civil war - told followers it was a "religious duty" to get off the streets to allow security forces to keep order. Up until the last minute before the curfew was imposed at 20.30 local time (18.30 GMT), young men were in the streets around Beirut's Arab University.
