In early 1944, the fate of World War II in Europe was about to change forever. Inside the mountain retreat known as the Berghof, Adolf Hitler studied maps showing the vast territory controlled by Nazi Germany. From France to the outskirts of Moscow, the Third Reich appeared powerful and secure. But behind the illusion of control, a massive threat was forming across the English Channel. Millions of Allied troops were gathering in Britain, preparing for the invasion that would become D-Day and the Normandy landings. German commanders such as Erwin Rommel and Gerd von Rundstedt understood the danger. They knew that once the Allies landed in France, Germany would face a true two-front war while already fighting the massive armies of the Red Army in the east. Rommel pushed for stronger coastal defenses along the Atlantic Wall, warning that Allied air superiority would make it impossible to stop the invasion once it reached inland France. But Hitler believed the Western Allies were weak. He believed the Wehrmacht could defeat any landing and throw the invaders back into the sea. When the Allied invasion finally began on June 6, 1944, German defenses were divided, reserves were held back under Hitler’s personal control, and confusion slowed the response. Within days, the Allies had established a foothold in France. The second front Hitler had underestimated was now unstoppable. The invasion would eventually lead to the liberation of Western Europe, the collapse of Nazi Germany, and the final defeat of the Third Reich. This is the story of the strategic mistake that allowed the Second Front to succeed. #ww2 #worldwar2 #dday #normandyinvasion #ww2history #militaryhistory #historydocumentary #wehrmacht #hitler #battleofnormandy #ww2stories
