Evaluating dogs in shelters is a double edged sword. On one hand is can tell us a lot about a dog. It gives some insight into how dogs may react to common everyday day scenarios. It helps with being able to match a dog more appropriately in a home. But, if we are to truly honor and understand the dogs we are trying to help we must always take into consideration a very imperative rule: Environment effects behavior. When dogs are in a frantic, high energy, frightening environment like a shelter they are going to behave much differently than they would in a quiet, peaceful and calm environment. Dogs in shelters are typically either shut down or highly aroused and agitated. Now if we put them in an obviously staged setting and add more stress, we are likely to see reactions that we wouldn't see when the dog didn't feel so defensive. So are we really reading dogs or just poking and prodding them? I was the Head Trainer at a SPCA where my main job was to evaluate the dogs. I speak from personal experience when I say that looking back, when it comes to the food aggression test, I definitely believe we were creating way more defense and making the matter worse. We were taught to conduct the test this way. Hey you live and you learn. In this video I demonstrate how the Asses-A-Hand can create more aggression as it it very invasive and threatening to the dog. As soon as I remove it the dog's attitude completely changes and I am able to hand feed him. Although I believe the handler's safety always comes first, we must realize how these evaluation tools can create more defense, therefore create more aggression.
