PREPARE TO LEAVE: Holidaymakers have been asked to stay away from Queensland's Fraser Island, or K'gari, as authorities struggle to control a huge bushfire that has been burning for six weeks. The fire has been raging through the World Heritage site, destroying hectares of forest. Fire and rescue teams have been battling fires on two fronts made worse by a heatwave affecting Australia's east coast. PREPARE TO LEAVE : Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) advises there is a bushfire near the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village on K’gari (Fraser Island) and conditions could get worse. There is a separate warning for residents on K'gari (Fraser Island). Fraser Island fire warning increased as flames move south towards resort and village. More than 80,000 hectares of Fraser Island (K'Gari) have been blackened by the fire and there are multiple fire fronts, the most concerning is near Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village. Residents and staff at Fraser Island's largest resort and the neighbouring village have been told to prepare to leave, with the fire warning this morning increased to Watch and Act level. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) say the bushfire is travelling south from Boon Boon Creek towards the resort and village a day after guests were evacuated. Tour operators have backed calls for an inquiry into fire management and prevention. A bushfire has burned across half of the World Heritage- listed K'gari Island.
