Dear friends, throughout 2023 we will be publishing excerpts of concerts and other events that took place during Yiddish Summer Weimar 2022. We'll start with The Amber Gate, a Greco-Yiddish project led by Yiddish Summer Weimar’s artistic director, Alan Bern. 20 years ago, Brave Old World and the Smyrna Trio opened the gate to a revival of the centuries-old exchange between Yiddish and Greco-Turkish music. This year, members of those legendary ensembles re-unite for the first time at Yiddish Summer Weimar to renew their collaboration, joined by additional colleagues. Performing passionate songs in Yiddish and Greek about exile, unrequited love, underworld characters and historic events, as well as driving, sensual dance tunes, The Amber Gate features acknowledged masters in a virtuosic collaboration. Line-up: Michael Alpert (USA/SCT) - voice, violin Alan Bern (USA/D) - accordion, piano, music director Christian Dawid (D) - wind instruments Kyriakos Gouventas (GR) - violin, baglama Vassilis Ketentzoglou (GR) - guitar Mark Kovnatskiy (D) - violin Sofia Papazoglou (GR) - voice
