I've litter-picked a lot over the past two years in North-West London and during this time I've had plenty of time and plenty of opportunities to observe the stark difference in attitudes towards littering among different generations of people. Irrespective of what the "ground truth" is, I haven't seen many elderly people dropping empty chicken boxes on the pavement, throwing beer cans over the shoulder in the nearest bush, leaving disposable barbecues on the grass, forgetting their picnic leftovers in the middle of the park, etc. So every time I stop and chat with older locals, I can always tell the despair in their voices when they start talking about just how bad things have got and how powerless they feel as witnesses to the degradation around them. We are running with our eyes closed through an era of consumption, entitlement and ignorance like never before in history. Its effects are visible everywhere we look. The only difference between me and the older gentlemen in this video is that I can still put up a fight against it.
