FAILED the SCRATCH Test. How about IMPACT? - Pela Canopy Liquid Screen Protector Review

Remember the Pela Case? They one that resulted in my iPhone 11 Pro Max’s screen breaking? Well, my screen ~might have survived IF I decided to use Pela’s 60 dollar liquid screen protector. ~Might have. So here’s what I did to test the the Pela Canopy Liquid screen protector. First, I paid 60 dollars for the product, (it’s 30 now), slathered the screen protector on one pane of glass, one iPhone and one Apple Watch. Then I dropped Bertha, the 200g steel ball on it until it broke repeatedly and then scratched it with Eileen, the rock that chewed up the normal screen protectors in my Shellrus Sapphire screen protector review. Out of all those tests, the impact protection improvement was noticeable but the scratch protection was not. So is the marketing fluff a pile of Monty crap. I’ll let you decide. My recommended screen protectors:    • Top 5 TOUGHEST Glass Screen Protectors for...   Watch how my iPhone broke in the Pela Case:    • Will it PROTECT my iPhone 11? Drop-Tested!...   Now Pela says you can slather the fluid over three devices which is handy BUT that feature isn’t anything special since you can do that with other liquid screen protectors as well. BUT unlike other liquid screen protectors, you have to provide your own cloth. Which in this case is like paying for a Triple AAA piece of rib-eye at a restaurant and then having them tell you that you need to bring your own plate. The Canopy is 95% ethanol and 5% their own active ingredient. What is it exactly? I had no idea so I asked their CS and they said they didn’t know but let me know that it was food grade. Sweet? Now according to their instructions, after you slather the liquid screen protector onto your device using your self-supplied fabric, you only have to wait 2 minutes for the stuff to harden. Now to test the 10x strength claim, I used three of the cheapest screen protectors I could find. These were from the same seller I used in my toughest iPhone screen protector video and oddly enough, the glass that came in this brown box was average tempered glass, not crap glass. On average, the screen protectors broke around ~70cm’s. With the Canopy applied screen protector, it broke around 85-90cm which is a noticeable difference. So the untreated glass screen protector broke at a range of average tempered glass. With the Canopy, it sat in the area between good tempered glass and double tempered glass. Now this improvement in impact protection isn’t surprising given that the other liquid screen protectors I tested provided similar protection. Now is it 10x’s the strength, hard to say but I’d have to say NO. A definitely improvement but a bit overstated. Now after smushing the Canopy covered screen protector between Bertha and a granite slab, I took all the usual suspects in trying to scratch the screen protector. Coins and knives which have a Moh’s hardness of around 5 and 6 and this rock which as a hardness around 7. And like every screen protector that I’ve used, it scratches around 7 which is a far cry from the 9 that Pela’s CS stated for me. Let that sink in, it doesn’t add any noticeable scratch protection. And here’s the bad thing about liquid screen protectors. It becomes part of your screen so when your screen scratches, you can’t remove it. You’re stuck with it. This iPhone 11 Pro had a flawless screen when I applied the Canopy. After a week in my pocket, I’ve got several micro-abrasions. If this was a normal screen protector, I’d just take it off and put a new one on. I can’t do that now unless I replace the screen and that’s great for the environment right? With the Apple Watch that I put it on, I wanted to see if their product would minimize scratches. Like touch up paint for your car. The giant gashes on my Series 4 are just a giant and gashy after applying the Canopy. So according to Pela, 10X the strength of the glass is equivalent to mildy better impact protection and no additional scratch protection. Is the Canopy a pile of steaming Monty marketing fluff? I’d say so. I give props but at the end of the day, would still recommend going with a normal glass screen protector if you want the best protection for your device.
