Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. This set is dedicated to the loving memory of MC Skibadee and Terror Danjah (founder of the Reckless Crew). Recorded the two days after Kool FM's 15th birthday, on Fri 1st Dec 2006 @ministrysound. London bear witness to the Newham General's, D Double E, joining forces with old time friend, Funsta MC (both of them being part of the Reckless Crew) alongside the Uncontrolablez (UNCZ) DJ Ruffstuff and MC Skibadee. The early to mid 2000s saw the introduction of the digital age with many stations switching to online platforms. Although pirate radio was still very popular in inner city London and many UK cities, there was a massive governmental drive to eliminate them. In 2003, the DTI was closed down and replaced by OFCOM which saw stations tread thinly with more trepidation as the authorities upped their game to crack down on them. In 2007, the BBC published a unfounded story accusing Kool FM of interfering with air traffic control in what is believed to be part of wider government led initiative to rid London's FM dial of pirate radio stations. Firstly, as means to generate revenue due to the extent of money they could make from granting commercial licenses to corporations wishing to set up stations on the FM dial. Secondly, the sweeping agenda to shutdown and control people's freedom of thought, by designing institutions like 1Xtra as a means to co-opt performers, musicians, creative people and curbing the local ones run by communities. At this point in time the Drum & Bass scene was no longer a UK phenomenon and its global commercial outreach made it into respected music genre worldwide. The UK's Drum & Bass producers, DJs and MCs were now sought after by major labels and were touring the world. Kool FM which was at the forefront of the scene was one of the most credible platforms that was still known for its reputable lineup of DJs, MCs and producers. It was a common feature to hear of London's legendary DNB DJs and MCs going to Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand...In the years before this explosion the scene was fairly close knit but more room had been created for those artists who weren't getting recognition. They were changing times and so Kool FM began to recruit a new breed of performers to refresh and maintain their legendary status as an institution for talent, and not just trend setters.
