It's a highly anticipated day in Chicago! In 2019, the CTA broke ground on a $2.1 billion modernization project, known as Phase I of the Red-Purple Modernization Project. The project includes reconstruction of a significant stretch of track on the north side of the city, a new flyover structure, and four new, modern rail stations. While the initial work on the project was site preparation work, 2020 and 2021 saw the beginning of substantial work that was visible to the everyday rider. This came with service impacts ranging from alternate platforms being used on services, to entire stations being closed for over four years. As of July 20, 2025, the major work observable to passengers has been completed and normal operations have resumed. In today's video, I briefly discuss the background of this project, and then explore the new line and stations. Since four years is quite a long time, and many may be unfamiliar with the "normal" service patterns we haven't seen since 2021, I'll also be discussing what operations will look like in their "as intended" state on and around this busy branch of the CTA's network. -- CHAPTERS -- 0:00 - Intro 2:23 - Clark Junction and the Red-Purple Bypass 6:44 - Visiting the Lawrence to Bryn Mawr Modernization Corridor 7:37 - Wilson Station 9:03 - Lawrence Station 9:29 - A short side-rant 12:41 - Lawrence Station (part 2) 16:23 - Argyle Station 18:47 - Visiting the old Temporary Argyle Station 19:25 - Berwyn Station 21:49 - Bryn Mawr Station 24:34 - Bus Rerouting 28:20 - Outro -- FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE PROJECT -- I discuss the situation at Clark Junction in an Episode of The Oldest Rails: • This Is The Oldest Part Of The Red Line I discuss the logistics of the Lawrence to Bryn Mawr Modernization Project in another video from earlier in the project: • Lawrence to Bryn Mawr Modernization Stage ...
