Piquet was noticed, hanging out on an inner city terrace house picket fence, waiting for the next open house inspection, forgetting that she'd already sold the house the previous week. But seriously - Picket (pronounced Piquet) came to grief in a narrow inner city street, hitting her head and ending up somewhere she couldn't get enough height to fly way, whilst nursing a monumental headache. She put up no struggle to being rescued, and is resting in a sling for the day and we'll see how she feels in the evening. She is in some good company and will be buddies with (but in a separate cage) Mr Cauliflower. They won't be put in together because the boys are bulking up for breeding season and the girls in care don't need to be harassed by unwanted male attention. Picket isn't well enough to fend off this kind of attention yet. In the release aviary they are also sex-separated, and there will be a girl release and a boy release so the captive girls aren't harassed. In the wild they can get away from the attention should they choose, but in a cage they have no options. If we do a mixed sex release, the ratio of girls to boys is about 6-8 girls to one boy, to reduce the harassment on any one girl. Anyway, we're ahead of ourselves, and Piquet is still on day one in care. Let's give her a chance to recover before making plans for her future. Update: Piquet lost her fight for life this evening, 36 hours after rescue. RIP Piquet.
