(8 Jul 1997) Spanish/Nat Forensic experts have been called in to certify that a body airlifted into Mexico City on Sunday is that of the notorious drug lord Amado Carrillo Fuentes. Very little is known of Carrillo's identity and police remain uncertain as to whether the corpse is that of the man whose frequent use of jetliners to ship cocaine won him the nickname Lord of the Skies. But Carrillo Fuentes' family insists he is dead and have flown to Mexico City to claim back the body. Carillo's family say he died of a heart attack on Saturday while undergoing plastic surgery to dramatically change his appearance. A question mark hangs over the true identity of a corpse alleged to be that of Amado Carrillo Fuentes. Forty-one-year-old Carrillo, one of the world's most wanted drug lords, was reported dead late on Saturday. But police have yet to be convinced. Officers were despatched to bring the body in for forensic tests in Mexico City on Sunday but, on Monday, the authorities were still unsatisfied. Unofficial reports on Tuesday indicated there had been a positive identification after fingerprints of the dead man were compared with those on Carrillo's border crossing card, previously issued by the US Immigration and Naturalization service. The identification process has been complicated by the fact Carrillo avoided the camera so effectively. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Amado Carrillo Fuentes. The attorney general's office reiterates what it has indicated in its previous announcements. There will be no other declaration, other than to ratify that once the examinations have been carried out, and with 100 per cent certainty, it will be immediately made known." SUPER CAPTION: Mario Herran Salvati, Director of Mexico's Anti-Drugs Institute Only one piece of video footage, capturing Carrillo on camera at a family wedding, has ever fallen into police hands. But Carrillo's mother, Aurora Fuentes de Carrillo, was in no doubt her son was dead. She had to be forcibly parted from the coffin on Saturday when police arrived to take it away. A communique issued by the federal attorney general's office in Mexico City following initial tests on the body was less sure. It said a man identified as Antonio Flores, had checked into a Mexico City hospital on Thursday and underwent eight hours of facial surgery. He died at 4am (local) from a heart attack. Carillo's relatives say he died of a heart attack after undergoing plastic surgery to dramatically change his appearance. His death, if genuine, threatens to ignite an underworld battle for control of cocaine smuggling along Mexico's two thousand mile (32-hundred kilometer) border with the United States. Carrillo's relatives had planned to hold a funeral for the druglord on Tuesday to which they invited neighboring townsfolk in the northwestern state of Sinaloa. But the body remains in Mexico City. In Washington, State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns on Monday refused to rule out the possibility that Carrillo had faked his death to throw investigators off his trail. But U-S Drug Enforcement Administration officials said Sunday that they were sure the body was his.
