Who was Jacob (Israel) in the Bible?

Jacob is the third major patriarch and father of God’s people in the Book of Genesis. He was the second-born twin son of Isaac and Rebekah. With his mother’s help, he tricked his father into giving him his blessing and making him the family heir. Fearing his twin brother Esau’s revenge, he fled to the protection and service of his mother’s relative Laban. Along the way at Bethel he had a dream of angels traveling up and down a staircase. After the dream he met and immediately fell in love with Laban’s daughter Rachel. He vowed to work for Laban for seven years in order to gain Rachel’s hand in marriage, but Laban tricked him into marrying his older daughter Leah as well. Eventually, Jacob was able to escape Laban’s service and return home to gain the forgiveness of his brother Esau. Then one night God appeared to him in the form of a man and wrestled with him. At the end of the wrestling match, God gave Jacob a new name: Israel. Jacob’s sons became the names of the twelve tribes of Israel because they are all descended from him. Jacob died in Egypt where his favorite son Joseph had earned an esteemed place for their family during a famine in the land of Canaan.
