The Nairobi Southern Bypass Highway is a vital transportation artery in Kenya, serving as a semi-circular route through the southwestern districts of the nation's capital, Nairobi. Stretching over approximately 29.6 kilometers (18 miles), this four-lane dual carriageway plays a pivotal role in alleviating traffic congestion within the bustling central business district of Nairobi. The highway commences at the intersection of Nairobi–Mombasa Road and Likoni Road, situated about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of Nairobi's city center. From this point, it gracefully meanders through the southwestern suburbs of Nairobi, traversing areas such as the periphery of Nairobi National Park, Uhuru Gardens, Lang'ata, and Dagoretti. Upon entering Kiambu County, it changes direction northward, passing through Muguga and culminating in the town of Kikuyu, specifically in the Gitaru neighborhood, where it seamlessly connects with the Nairobi-Malaba Road (A104). One of its primary objectives is to divert long-distance traffic, particularly that bound for western Kenya and landlocked countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, away from the heart of Nairobi. By doing so, it significantly contributes to mitigating traffic congestion in the central business district. The construction of this essential infrastructure project was entrusted to the China Road and Bridge Corporation, under the auspices of the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA). The endeavor required an investment of approximately US$180 million (KSh18 billion), with funding contributions from both the government of Kenya and the Export Import Bank of China. This impressive infrastructure was officially inaugurated on November 2, 2016, during a ceremony presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya and attended by President John Magufuli of Tanzania.
