Shenandoah is a song of love, separation and longing - concepts and emotions that will resonate with many at the moment. This video marks one year since LHC became a virtual choir out of necessity, and is dedicated to the loved ones from whom we are separated. A popular American folk song, Shenandoah likely originated with early French Canadian “voyageurs”, or fur traders. They often sang while they paddled their canoes along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, including the Missouri, in pursuit of trades. The lyrics tell the story of one such trader who fell in love with the daughter of an Oneida Iroquois chief. By the mid-1800s, various versions of the song had become sea shanties, sung by sailors across the world. In summing up the beauty and appeal of Shenandoah, John and Alan Lomax write in their book, Best Loved American Folk Songs: “The melody has the roll and surge and freedom of a tall ship sweeping along before a trade wind. The sonorous succession of long vowels and soft and liquid consonants blend perfectly with the romantic air.” Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you, And hear your rolling river Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you, Away, we’re bound away Across the wide Missouri. Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away, you rolling river Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away, we’re bound away Across the wide Missouri. Farewell my dear, I’m bound to leave you, Away, you rolling river Oh Shenandoah, I’ll not deceive you, Away, we’re bound away Across the wide Missouri. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Singers: London Humanist Choir (https://london.humanistchoir.org) - the official choir of Humanists UK, registered charity 285987 Musical Director: Laurel Neighbour (http://www.laurelneighbour.com) Assistant Musical Director: Harry Baker (https://www.harrybakermusic.com) Audio Editor: Alexander Jaye (http://alexjhall.co.uk) Video Editor: David Jack Fenton (https://davidjackfenton.com) Music: Traditional North American Arrangement: Bob Chilcott Copyright: 1992 The KS Music Company Ltd ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ #virtualchoir #onlinechoir #choir #singer #singers #singing #choirantine #humanist #humanism #shenandoah #stillconnected ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you like what you hear, and the work that we do in promoting Humanism through music, please consider supporting us by way of a small donation.
