Ashura Jaloos (Procession) in Manhattan, New York August 23rd, 2020 - Muharram 1442 The Ashura jaloos, is in remembrance of the grandson of the Holy Prophet of Islam, Imam Hussain (AS), who alongside his family, friends, and companions was massacred for taking action against tyranny and oppression. To this day, Shia Muslims, lovers of the Ahlulbayt (AS), and all those with a sense of humanity commemorate the tragedies that fell upon the family of the holy Prophet of Islam. To commemorate, eulogies are recited, chest beating is performed as if to feel the pain that the Imam Hussain AS went through. Imam Hussain (AS) and the message that was delivered on the day of Ashura is for ALL. All attendees wore face coverings and practiced social distancing wherever possible. All attendees joined the procession at their own discretion, and were advised to stay home if they were unwell, and/or experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms. Temperature checks, Hand Sanitizer, and face masks were handed out throughout the procession. We would like to express our gratitude to the city of New York, and to the New York Police Department, for providing there services and ensuring that this Procession went as smoothly as possible.
