The great masters of Tai Chi wrote off a skill called Ting Jin, Listening Force, that represented their ability to determine the opponent's force, center, and exactly how to affect them using their Tai Chi skill. But how exactly do you do that? You do so by extending your awareness into the opponent. What does it mean to extend your awareness into an opponent? This is a practical form of what people sometimes say about expanding your mind, becoming one with the universe. Essentially, you use the human super power of being able to learn a tool and use it as an extension of your own body. You might think though that there is something more to this than just knowing the leverage, weight, and fulcrum of a hammer, and you'd be right to realize that indeed with Ting Jin you are aware of them at a complete level, beyond physical measurements, because a complete awareness includes awareness at a mental, emotional, and energetic level. This video is a brief introduction of this process of extending your complete awareness beyond the physical boundaries of yourself that we call Inclusion. In follow-up videos we will look at details of how you can develop the skill of Inclusion, what facilitates or interferes with it, and how this is the intersection between Tai Chi as a martial art and as a spiritual practice and a healing art.
