An appendix is a small, fingerlike pouch attached to the large intestine that plays a role in the immune system and may help store good bacteria. While its exact function is still being studied, if it becomes inflamed, it is a condition called appendicitis, a medical emergency that often requires surgical removal (an appendectomy). What is it? A small, tubular organ connected to the beginning of the large intestine (colon). It produces mucus and contains immune tissue. It is located in the lower right part of the abdomen. What does it do? Immune function: The appendix contains lymphoid tissue, which helps the body fight disease. Bacterial reservoir: Some theories suggest it serves as a "safe house" for beneficial gut bacteria, helping to replenish them after illness or antibiotic use. What is appendicitis? A medical emergency where the appendix becomes inflamed and swollen. Causes include blockages from dried mucus, stool, or parasites. If left untreated, it can rupture, leading to a serious infection. Symptoms of appendicitis: Sudden pain that often begins near the belly button and moves to the lower right abdomen. Pain that worsens with movement. Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. A low-grade fever. Treatment: Appendicitis is a serious condition that often requires surgery to remove the appendix (appendectomy). In some cases, mild appendicitis may be treated with antibiotics, though surgery may still be needed later. Can you live without it?
