Cryoablation is ideal in low-grade early prostate cancers and in recurred cancers after radiotherapy. In this treatment, we simply kill the cancer tissue by freezing it at temperatures -140 to 190 degrees Celcius. We have been using this technique as a curative therapy in Gleason 6-7 prostate cancers if the tumor is confined to the prostate. Unlike radiotherapy, cryoablation can be repeated as many times as necessary if the tumors recurs. Therefore, it is probably the best option in patients whose prostate cancer has recurred after radiotherapy. Compared to prostate surgery and radiotherapy, cryoablation has fewer and milder side effects. It is done under local anesthesia and mild sedation. There is very little pain during and after the procedure. Cryoablation is far less harmful tu the urethra and surrounding organs such as rectum and urine bladder. The technique is in use in the treatment of prostate cancer for more than 30 years.
