Nagim Mendygaliyev is one of the most vivid and distinctive composers of Kazakhstan. He has written many fascinating works for orchestra, vocal, and solo piano. One of the most unique examples of his creativity is the "Legend of the Dombra" (Dombra - a Kazakh national two-string instrument). The piece is written in a three-part form, where the first and third parts refer to the unique plucking sound produced by the dombra. Often, the content of this work refers to the ancient Kazakh legend of the black messenger, who was supposed to inform Genghis Khan of the death of his son. In those times, anyone who took on the responsibility of delivering such mournful news to the khan was met with certain death. Upon arrival, the messenger took out the dombra and played a Kazakh kui (a traditional instrumental piece) on it, without saying a word. Then the khan had no choice but to order the dombra to be executed by pouring lead over it.
