The other day, while walking around Tashkent, we stopped by a small but cozy place calledthe Ikuo Hirayama Caravanserai of Culture at the Academy of Artsof Uzbekistan. A little background. In 1999, a meeting took place in Japan between the chairman of the Academy of Arts of UzbekistanTursunali Kuziev and the famous Japanese artist Ikuo Hirayama, who came upwith the idea of creating a cultural center in Tashkent dedicated to the history of the Great SilkRoad. The nameof the facility is associated with the caravanserais of the past, because it was here thatmerchants and travelers following the Great Silk Road rested on their journey. Here theymet, talked, shared stories about their countries, customs, and everyday life—this is howcultural exchange between East and West took place. The Caravanseraiof Culture is simultaneously a museum, a scientific center, and a cultural center. It was openedin 2002, and on May 13, 2004, the President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, granted this institution state status. Here, exhibitions of international works of art and culture are held, as well as conferences withpresentations by renowned scientists, charity events to support youngtalents, and children's drawing competitions.Thecultural center building is surrounded by a small Friendship Garden, where trees andshrubs planted by political figures grow. OnMay 29, 2005, a monument called “Hiroshima Peace Stone” was installed on the grounds of the cultural center. This stone slab was once part of the road surface in Hiroshimaand today is a symbol of preserving peace.
