In this video, I give "10 Things I Avoid As A Financial Minimalist." 1. Economic Doomsday Predictions Economic doomsday predictions are the constant negative economic outcome predictions that we see everyday. The reason why there are so many people giving doomsday and panic is because these areas are very profitable. I avoid consuming this type of content because I do not see any benefit. 2. People Who Make Unrealistic Promises People and companies often try to sell or promote products by making unrealistic promises. There are often the promises that a certain product will make you happier or your life better; however these are just marketing strategies. I avoid falling for these tricks because I do not believe these promises. 3. Being In A Hurry When you are in a hurry, you are unable to think straight. There are many negative outcomes that comes from being in a hurry like paying more, making a mistake, or being stressed out. In my life I try to never be in a hurry and take my time when doing things. 4. Thinking That “This” Is A Luxurious Life We often view a luxurious life as a life with big houses and nice cars; however, I do not believe that this is luxury. I believe that luxury is having things like clean drinking water, hot showers, and safe food. We often take these small things for granted, but these are the things that create a high standard of living. I avoid portrayed "luxurious" items because I believe I already have a luxurious life. 5. Lowering My Quality Of Life To Save Money There is this myth with financial minimalism that it is a life where you are lowering your quality of life to save money; however, being cheap is not the same thing as financial minimalism. Financial minimalism is using you money strategically to bring value in your life. I avoid being cheap and use my money to provide me a good quality of life. 6. Basing My Days Off The Weather Basing your life off the economy is like basing your life off the weather. The economy is going to do its own thing and we have very little control over it. As a financial minimalist, I prepare for what life will throw at me, so I do not have to base my life off the economy. 7. Comparing Myself To Others No two life journeys are the same. In this day and age, it is hard to not compare yourself to others; however, comparing yourself to others can be very costly. As much as I can, I avoid comparing myself to others and focus on my own life journey. 8. Lifestyle Creep Lifestyle creep happens as you start to get older and make more money, you start upgrading your life. Your spending starts to reflect your salary and your living expenses can get to an unsustainable level. If something happens like a recession or you lose your job, you are unable to pay for your lifestyle. Before I make any changes in my life, I make sure I do it in a sustainable way so I do not hurt my future financial self. 9. Conforming to Debt Inevitability We often view debt as something that is inevitable. Debt can be avoided and life is much better without it. You can avoid debt by living within your means, delaying your gratification, and taking control of your finances. I avoid debt at all costs and keep my finances simple. 10. Allowing to money to prevent me from living my dreams Money should be your friend and allow you to do what you want in your life.
