Anti-hazing advocates report majority of Washington colleges are failing to report hazing

Anti-hazing advocates are raising concerns over the failure of many Washington state colleges and universities to comply with Sam's Law, which mandates schools publicly disclose hazing incidents. The law, named after Sam Martinez, a Washington State University student from Bellevue who died in a hazing incident in 2019, requires institutions to provide public access to data on reported hazing incidents. However, advocates report that only 11 out of more than 30 schools in the state are in compliance with state law. "Parents have to have that information so that they can help guide their college students to safety," Jolayne Houtz, the mother of Sam Martinez and founder of HazingInfo.org, said. "Sam paid for this with his life, and my job is to make sure that no other family does."
