(29 Jul 1996) English/Nat Doctor Jack Kevorkian, the medical doctor famous for helping terminally ill patients die has been accused by the Washington Post newspaper of helping a supposedly healthy patient end her life. The Post article claimed the medical examiner who autopsied the body of 39-year-old Rebecca Badger, said there was no evidence of any medical disease. Rebecca apparently contacted Kevorkian, a retired pathologist, after supposedly suffering from multiple sclerosis for 11 years. She was the doctors 33rd patient. Defiantly striding in to face the media at the National Press Club in Washington, controversial Doctor Jack Kevorkian was taking no prisoners over an issue he is passionate about. The retired pathologist vigorously defended his actions in the case of Rebecca Badger, his 33rd patient who he helped die. SOUNDBITE: (English) "And I am not on a crusade. I'm a doctor. The patient in front of me is all that counts and I help one patient at a time, and now that it's 33 you say well he's on a crusade. Hell a surgeon helps a hundred people in a year and he's not on a crusade, he's doing his duty, and that's all that I am doing. The crusade I have nothing to do with." SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Jack Kevorkian Rebecca contacted Kevorkian after supposedly suffering from multiple sclerosis for 11 years and decided she no longer wanted to go on. But the Post claims the medical examiner in Michigan, where she was autopsied, said the body showed no signs of medical disease. And Kevorkian's methods have caused outrage in some sections of America. Outside the press club, pro-life campaigners and disabled people paraded with banners. They are outraged at what they consider blatant murder on the part of the doctor. Reverend Pat Mahoney a vehement pro-life campaigner called Doctor Kevorkian nothing more than an evil vulture. He is concerned that helping patients commit suicide is merely the thin end of the wedge that could eventually lead to innocent people being legitimately murdered. SOUNDBITE: (English) "That if we allow assisted physician suicide, innocent people will die. Innocent people will be killed, and what do we say as a nation when we allow the most weak and frail of our society to be killed by this medical vulture. And that's what he is, Jack Kevorkian is nothing more than a vulture preying on the weak and needy of our society." SUPER CAPTION: Reverend Pat Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defence Coalition Inside the press club, Kevorkian's lawyer strongly rebutted the claims made by the medical examiner over the autopsy of Rebecca's body. He further believes that the examiner was biased against Kevorkian's methods and so doubted the accuracy of the final report, which claimed the body was healthy. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We've gone through all this before. We've had the prosecutor, we've had the medical examiner with metastatic cancer didn't have cancer, people with Alzheimers disease didn't have Alzheimers disease. Alzheimers disease isn't fatal and now a person who has been treated for the last 11 years by her physicians in California doesn't have multiple sclerosis and that's just wonderful. It doesn't happen to be true."
