(7 Jul 1999) English/Nat Hillary Rodham Clinton is kicking off her "listening tour" in upstate New York. The U-S first lady is there as a prospective Senate candidate. While Mrs. Clinton is acting a lot like a candidate, the First Lady hasn't said she will definitely run. If she does, it will be a first. No U-S first lady has ever run for public office. The First Lady kicked off what could well be her first campaign event Wednesday morning. Hillary Rodham Clinton is launching what she calls a "listening tour" of New York state. It began at the picturesque farm of the man she hopes to succeed. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan gave the first lady a tour of his home, including a schoolhouse that's more than 150 years old. The two then made their way down a dirt road to where more than 200 reporters and photographers waited. The carpetbagger question was the first one asked. Why would Mrs. Clinton seek election from a state where she has never lived or worked? SOUNDBITE (English): "I think it's a very fair question, and I fully understand people raising it. And I think I have some real work to do to get out and listen and learn from the people of New York and demonstrate that what I'm for is maybe as important, if not more important, than where I'm from." SUPER CAPTION: Hillary Rodham Clinton, U.S. First Lady Mrs. Clinton formed a committee Tuesday to explore a run for the Senate seat from New York. That allows her to raise and spend money for political purposes, like a full-fledged candidate. Mrs. Clinton has incredible name recognition by virtue of her position as first lady. But some of the Clinton administration's baggage also trails along behind her. Between that and Republian challangers - like Mayor Rudolph Guiliani - it would not be an easy win. SOUNDBITE (English): " I have no illusions that it will not be a very difficult and challenging race, but that's what should happen in a democracy. I think that's - it's to be expected. We need that kind of back and forth and exchange of ideas from people. So I am - I'm very anxious to get out and listen to New Yorkers and learn from them, and I'm very excited about figuring out ways we can work together." SUPER CAPTION: Hillary Rodham Clinton, U.S. First Lady Supporters and protestors alike, lined Mrs. Clinton's route. Some carried signs professing their love and support. Others said simply, "Go Home". UPSOUND: Clinton Supporter "Here's somebody who want to learn about us and do something for us up here...." Clinton Detractor: "...her on political stepping stone, New York state, riding off of her husband's coattails.." One man strongly supporting Mrs. Clinton, is Moynihan. His endorsement comes despite his sometimes rocky relationship with the Clinton administration. SOUNDBITE (English): "I'm here to say that I hope she will go all the way. I mean to go all the way with her. I think she's going to win. I think it's going to be wonderful for New York. And we'll be proud of our senator and the nation will notice." SUPER CAPTION: Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Democrat, New York If she runs, she'll be the first to try to fulfill her duties as first lady while campaigning for office. Mrs. Clinton compared herself to those who serve as a governor or congressman, while running for senate or president.
